Synopsis

A kind of social influence in which people modify their attitude or behaviour in order to comply to or remain consistent with the established social standards. Conformity is influenced by the following factors: A cohesive group, the size of the group, and the kind of social norms: Integrity and Consistency: Cohesion and Conformity In this section, we are going to talk about the effect that cohesion has on compliance. In relation to the concept of conformity, the term "cohesiveness" refers to the degree of attraction experienced by an individual toward an overpowering group. Groups with attitudes that are more similar to one another are more cohesive than groups with attitudes that are more dissimilar to one another. Similarly, groups that are successful are more cohesive than groups that are not successful, and groups that have clear pathways to their goals are more cohesive than groups that do not have clear pathways. One of the most well-known findings in the field of social psychology is the observation that the degree to which cohesion (attraction) exists predicts the intensity of the demands to conform. This is one of the fundamental reasons why the vast majority of people are more inclined to accept social influence from close friends or someone they look up to than they are from other people.
Take, for instance, the scenario in which we enrol at a different educational institution and find that we have been assigned to a different student group for our coursework. As time goes on, you come to the conclusion that they have conservative ideas about the policies governing education. It is an intriguing possibility to consider whether or if our own perspectives shift as a result of collaborating with these new acquaintances. There is a good chance that, as time goes on, we will discover that we agree with them more and more. This is a significant likelihood. It is possible that it occurred as a result of cohesiveness, also known as a degree of attraction among the group of friends working on the same project.
